Install Themes on Linux Gnome, Cinnamon, LXDE, XFCE and Unity


Learn How to install a theme on various Linux desktops, PCs or Laptops like Gnome, Cinnamon, LXDE, XFCE, and Unity etc. There are a number of themes that the standard Linux Desktop comes incorporated with. No doubt, these themes, and icons are beautiful. You get to have quite some choice in selecting different layouts. However, with time one gets bored with repeating the same displays over and over again.

This is why there are many different themes and icons that you can install to completely revamp your display. This allows you to change the display of your system, of your Linux files, your icons, the window manager and much more. However, many people do not understand how to install and use these new themes. Here we explain how to use these newly downloaded themes on the Linux distress to create different display altogether.

How to install Icon and Themes:

The installation of themes and icons is quite easy. All you need to do is download the themes and icons, making sure they are in the '.zip' format. Besides this, you can also install the package or use a particular command from the Linux terminal for installation.

Download the themes:

Extract the files manually to a folder named '~/.icons' present in the home directory. You can create it if it's not already there.

Install the theme and icons by using the command line interface. The command is called Terminal via the PPA

How to use themes and icons:

Having downloaded and installed the themes and icons you now come to the exciting part. How to use them to change your display. There are a number of ways you can do this. Normally, you will have to download and install a Tweak tool or take the help of the default options to incorporate the installed themes and icons.

Genome desktop:

Open the genome Tweak tool > scroll to Appearance > chose the icon of your desire followed by "icons" from the drop down menu or choose the theme, followed by "GTK+" > -close the App

Unity desktop:

Open the Unity Tweak tool > choose the icons of preference or theme that you like > close the app

To install the Ubuntu Tweak tool, you will have to run the given command:

sudo apt-get install unity-tweak-tool

Once installed, open the Tweak tools and access the tab of icons and themes. Here you will the installed themes and icons waiting for selection.

Cinnamon desktop:

Go to menu > scroll to appearances > access the settings > choose the themes tab > chose the theme you like from the drop down bar > close the settings

For the icons, follow the above instructions, choosing the icons tab in the settings instead of themes.

LXDE desktop: 

Open menu > click on 'customize look and feel' > set the Icon theme > chose the icons of your choice > apply > close the app.

For themes, follow similar instructions, but chose the widget option from the 'customize look and feel' tab.

XFCE Desktop:

Open menu > choose settings > select appearances > tap on icons > chose the icons of preference > close the tab

For themes, follow the above instructions, selecting the 'style' option from rather appearance tab.

Following the given set of instructions, you can easily install a number of themes and use them on your desktop too. This means your system might be in for a revamp! Following
