Environmental Requirements

The Company across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will ensure that all workers and employees, subcontractors and visitors to any of our sites/facilities make every effort to ensure the protection of the environment and the avoidance of the undertaking any activity which will have an adverse impact on the environment. This will be achieved mainly by complying with all local environmental legislation, standards and guidelines including, but not limited to
  1. Identifying potential adverse impacts that could arise as a consequence of direct and indirect site activities.
  2. Establishing practical mitigation measures for the most significant environmental impacts of construction activities.
  3. Using only environmentally friendly products, as far as reasonably issues and awareness.

Commitment to the Environment  

The Company is committed to protecting developments that are constructed to high standards while preventing adverse impacts on the environment.
  1. Develop and update environmental policies and guidelines to provide a basis for the implementation of effective environmental protection measures.
  2.  Improve environmental knowledge and awareness, and to advance regional cooperation on the environment for the formulation of multi-dimensional action plans
  3.  Identify critical environmental problems and set priorities for mitigation and remediation works as required.

Compliance Procedure

Company project team will ensure all those involved in the project that any shortcomings are rectified immediately implements the following requirements:


  1.  Only environmentally friendly materials where possible shall be on site.
  2. Hazardous materials shall not be stored or used on site without adequate precautions to prevent their uncontrolled spread in the environment.

Site Activities:

  1. The approved boundaries of the location will be marked following the required specification.
  2. The site offices of XYZ company and their subcontractors will be contained within these limits together with any workshop, stores, car parking, sanitary arrangements and other associated facilities.
  3. All work activities will be carried out within the XYZ company site boundaries. All equipment, materials, and plant will be stored, used and maintained within these limits.


  1. XYZ company shall supply adequate sanitary facilities for their employees and sub-contractors. This will include rest areas, water tanks, cold drinking water and solid waste collection systems. The number of these facilities will comply with the requirements of the Code of Construction Practice.
  2. All liquid sanitary facilities shall drain to a contained and centralized collection system (Septic Tanks). Regular checks will be carried out to ensure zero leakage of materials from these tanks.
  3.  Sewage and solid waste will be collected by a specialist contractor on a regular basis and transported to waste disposal sites approved by the authorities.
  4.  No sewage wastage in any state will be released on open grounds, underground or open beaches/water bodies.

Handling of Waste:

  1. All waste stored on site temporarily will be covered to prevent windblown across the site and into the waterway.
  2. Waste piles greater than 2m high will be removed from the site in less than 48 hours. All other waste piles are to be surrounded by screen mesh fence to contain windblown debris. 
  3. Special waste (e.g. oil) and other environmentally hazardous materials shall be transported and recycled or disposed of by Main Contractors Safe Environmental Procedures.
  4. No disposal of waste in any state will take place locally by dumping on land or into the waterways.


  1. No preparation or cooking of food, which requires a heat source will be carried out on site outside the authorized mess halls if any.
  2. Suitable dedicated areas with easy access for vehicles shall be allocated for the storage of construction debris / solid waste materials before disposal, appropriate skips/rubbish bins shall be provided on site to enable proper collection.

Public Hygiene:

  1. Littering of any form is prohibited. Waste bins will be provided and used for disposal of domestic waste.
  2. Special bins will be provided and used for industrial waste.
  3. It is absolutely prohibited to use the beaches or the open grounds for sanitary purposes and any other activities that pose a potential risk to human health and the local eco-system.
  4. Approval from Main Contractor shall be obtained before works that involve site filling with material other than virgin excavated materials.
  5. No burning of any waste will take place at the site.

Workshop Activities:

  1. No workshop activities will take place without prior approval.
  2. All workshop and service activities shall be confined to a repair area within XYZ company site boundaries.
  3. No repairs will take place on side roads and open grounds.
  4. Broken down vehicles and equipment shall be moved to the workshop for repairs or servicing.
  5. Routine maintenance shall be done with utmost care at the designated location, and every precaution will be exercised to prevent the ground from contamination.
  6. All activities involving chemical solutions during painting, paint mixing, oil changing, etc. shall be conducted in locations confined to the repair areas over surfaces that are bonded. Accidental leakage is to be contained immediately and cleaned up to prevent migration of contaminants to other areas of the site.
  7. Contingency measures will be kept in place in an emergency situation where accidental spillage of hazardous liquid occurs.
  8. Should hazardous liquids migrate and seep into unpaved areas, EHSS SBG will be notified as soon as possible, and the incident is documented by the Environmental Compliance Procedure.
  9. A proper painting boot shall be constructed for such operations. The boot will have a good extraction/filtration system. All precautions shall be taken to limit the discharge of volatile substances and fumes into the air.
  10. Water containing suspended materials, hazardous waste or explosive materials such as mineral spirits; oil or paint thinner shall not be pumped or disposed of into storm water drains or sanitary sewers.

Material Handling:

  1. The storage of fuel, thinners and other chemicals that pose potential environmental hazards will be kept to the bare minimum quantities on site. Such materials shall be stored in a manner that prevents any potential environmental / safety as per the relevant (MSDS) Material Safety Data Sheet and EHSS requirements.
  2. All used (waste oil) will be stored temporarily on special facilities (bonded areas, pits or tanks) on site. Waste oil facilities shall be routinely inspected to ensure no leakage is taking place. An approved contractor will remove the waste.
  3. Any leaking compressed gas bottles, cylinders, oil and paint drums shall be removed from the site immediately and action taken to mitigate any adverse environmental impact.
  4. The HSE department shall keep any up to date register to all potentially hazardous materials. The record will include the following information: 
  • Name of Material
  • Type of Material
  • Quantity
  • Storage Method
  • Emergency Procedures
  • Location of Accompanying Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)

Training and Instruction: 

All employees and visitors to the XYZ company sites will be given clear instructions and training on environmental problems including, but not limited to:
  1. The use of adequate rubbish collection facilities.
  2. The use of sanitary facilities available.
  3. The importance of keeping sanitary facilities clean.
  4. The periodical checking and emptying of the rubbish containers and septic tanks.
  5. The prohibition of littering, urinating or defecating on the ground or in the watercourse.
  6. The hazards posed to the environment by pollutants, especially petroleum hydrocarbons.
  7. The significance of using environmentally friendly products.
  8. The reporting procedure for any environmental accidents.
  9. The emergency arrangements in case of an environmental incident.
